Argishti I of Urartu

Argišti I ( also known as Argištiše, Argischtis or Argishti I. transcribed ) was an Urartian king, who reigned about 785-753 BC.

Conquests

He was the son of his predecessor Menua and continued its expansionist policy. He was successful in the North East and penetrated to Lake Sevan ago. Thus, the area of Urartus South Georgia and Azerbaijan extended to northern Syria. An inscription from Argistis Elar north of Yerevan mentioned his victory over the country and the city Etiuni Darani in the country Uluani.

Under Argišti I. the Urartian metal industry received a boost when he conquered copper mines in the Lesser Caucasus and demanded that the neighboring states Tribute to metals.

Buildings

Numerous inscriptions tell of the temple and palace Argistis I and his promotion of agriculture. Argišti secured his conquests in the Ararat plain by numerous fortifications. Argišti I founded, among other Argištihinili (now in Armavir ), the main base Urartus in Transcaucasia, and Erebuni (now part of the Armenian capital of Yerevan ).
