Argus As 10

The Argus As 10 is an historic aircraft engine of the Argus Motoren Gesellschaft from the 1930s.

Construction

The Ace 10 is a hanging ( crankshaft above) eight-cylinder V-engine with 90 ° bank angle. The crankcase is made of electric iron. The quadruple offset crankshaft is mounted five times, two connecting rods engage into a crank pin. Since the right and left cylinder bank are balanced, come each crankpin a Gabelpleuel and a cross into the fork Einzelpleuel used. The flasks were manufactured in series production in gravity die casting and carry three compression rings and one oil scraper ring. The cylinder heads with an intake and exhaust valve per cylinder made of cast aluminum.

The hanging valves are operated by a central, five-bearing camshaft via tappets, pushrods, rocker arms and roller bearings. The camshaft is driven by spur gears. The valve train is fully enclosed and designed oil-tight.

As carburetor two back airworthy SUM are built 729a or 730a. The dry sump lubrication circulation is with a pressure pump and two scavenge pumps equipped ( in the cylinder heads ) and can be extended for back airworthiness to an oil pump. For three oil cleaning coarse filter and a gap filters are provided.

The airplane usual Doppelzündanlage with two magnetos and two-stage electric adjustment of the ignition came from Bosch. To start the ignition is turned to " late" ( after overcoming the ignition top dead center ), which in case of backfiring prevents flashback of the engine and can start the engine better. After start-up is immediately switched to pre-ignition.

Let the engine is either a manual starting device ( hand crank ) or a compressed air starting system. Optionally, a Bosch starter was available for a 24 -V DC electrical system.

Today's meaning

Currently, only a very small number of Argus AS -10 engines are in operation. It may well be less than ten pieces worldwide, three of which are used in the still flying the German Messerschmitt Bf 108 and two in airworthy Fieseler Storch. How many store potentially restoration compliant engines in museums or in private ownership, can not be determined. The few remaining vintage aircraft with an original Argus AS- 10 engine are still occasionally shown on airshows.
