Argyrophilic grain disease

The silver grain disease is a late-onset dementing disorder that is characterized by filamentous deposits in the brain in humans. Since these inclusions can be presented with special Versilberungstechniken ( argyrophilia ), it is in English also known as argyrophilic grain disease.

The average age at onset of the disease is 80 years. Patients exhibit behavioral problems such as agitation, violence, inädequates social behavior; cognitive impairment follow until later in. The deposits are found preferentially in the frontal or temporal lobes of the brain. They appear as fusiform to comma -like 4-9 microns large inclusions in nerve cell processes or oligodendroglia. The main component of these inclusions consists of the hyperphosphorylisiertem protein tau with inclusion of exon 10 (4 repeat tau). Since silver grains can occur supranuclear palsy or Corticobasal degeneration in combination with Alzheimer's, Progressive, they are observed, depending on the interpretation of the classification in up to 5% of the dementias. Some authors see the silver grain disease on a special form of Alzheimer's disease.
