Ari Rath

Ari Rath (born 6 January 1925 in Vienna as Arnold Rath ) is an Israeli journalist and publicist.

Life

Rath grew up in Vienna, Alsergrund (9th district), at the Porzellangasse against the tobacco monopoly ( Rath ) and attended high school Wasagasse. Arnold has been assigned by the "Christians class " separate " class Jews "; he experienced " the Austrian everyday anti-Semitism " even before 1938. According to the " annexation" of Austria, he had as a Jew in Austria no future and reached the age of 13 on a Kindertransport in November 1938 Trieste to Palestine. Through the help of a friend of his neighbor boys as he could, as he recalled in 2011 for a TV show, take his Steyr- Puch bicycle, gift for bar mitzvah, to Palestine.

There he was one of the founding members of the kibbutz Hamadia near Beit She'an in the north of the country and lived there 16 years. Rath studied History and Economics. In 1948 he visited Vienna for the first time after the Nazi period.

After he had turned to journalism, 1957 he was editor of the " Jerusalem Post ", an existing English-language Israeli newspaper today. (In this context, he also officially adopted the name Ari. ) As a journalist, he was one with Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin to the inner circle led by David Ben Gurion. In 1975 he assumed the position of editor in chief in 1979, he became editor of the paper.

Since retiring from the newspaper business in 1989, he is a freelance journalist and taught at the University of Potsdam. He continues to advocate the peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. Ari Rath has since 2007 in addition to his Israeli citizenship again the citizenship of Austria.

In the season 2013-14 he took part in the eyewitness production with The Last Witness by Doron Rabinovici and Matthias Hartmann at the Burgtheater in Vienna; production was related to the pogroms of November 1938, gained high esteem by the public and press, and has been invited to the Berlin Theatre Meeting 2014.

Awards

For his services to the Israeli- German and Israeli- Austrian agreement, he received numerous awards, among others:

  • 2006: Austrian title of Professor
  • 2011: Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria
