Ariamnes

Ariamnes was in the 4th century BC, a satrap of Cappadocia under the domination of the Persian empire of the Achaemenids.

Its existence is obscure, because it is in the traditions called only once. In Diodorus pedigree for royal dynasty of Cappadocia Ariamnes is called the son of Datames and father of Ariarathes I. and of the Holofernes. He is said to have reigned 50 years.

At least the filiation of Datames is viewed in more recent research as untrustworthy. According to Diodorus, the Cappadocian royal dynasty claimed a descent from a certain " King of Cappadocia Pharnakes " ( probably the Achaemenid Pharnakes ), who married a sister of Cyrus II and counted among his descendants, among others, one of the seven conspirators against Gaumata called Anaphas and just Datames should have. However, since in itself assigns the Datames biography of Cornelius Nepos this an entirely different family background, the lineage described in Diodorus of "King Pharnakes " to Ariamnes can be regarded as purely fictional.
