Noise Beer tensioner ( Arichanna melanaria )

Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 36 to 41 millimeters (36 to 39 millimeters ). The front wings are whitish, partially dirty light gray color with several to many small black spots resolved to brown transverse bands. When f hanseni Hedemann, 1881, all four wings are brown drowned. The drawing is more contrast in the males of the noise Beer tensioner total than in the female. The hind wings are bright yellow in the females, with the males bright yellow, each with a few blackish spots. The male moths have double combed sensor.

The caterpillars are smooth, yellowish in color and have more corrugated, black longitudinal lines laterally thicker. They also offer several orange yellow spots on the side. The pupa is brown yellow and has a conical cremaster with two spines.

Similar Species

The species is actually distinctive in Europe. A certain similarity exists even for gooseberry tensioner ( Abraxas grossulariata ). This has significantly fewer and larger spots and a pure white ground color of all wings.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The noise Beer clamper is mainly in central, northern and eastern Europe, for example, from the Alps to northern Fennoscandia. In Western Europe, the westernmost occurrence Auvergne lie in the Vosges and the? . Therefore, the type is missing in the British Isles, the Iberian peninsula, largely in France, Benelux, Italy ( with the exception of the Alpine portion) and the Balkan peninsula, as well as all the Mediterranean islands. In the East, the range extends up to the Russian Far East and Japan. In Central Asia, for example, is the kind detected in the Altai.

One finds the way in marshy areas, such as peat forests, moorlands and peat meadows with varying frequency. On limited points they may be very numerous, elsewhere it is very rare. In the Black Forest they come in over 1110 meters currently. On the island of Kyushu ( Japan), the subspecies Arichanna melanaria fraterna occurs in the higher mountain regions. The highest peaks are there high up over 1700 meters.

Way of life

The noise Beer tensioner is a generation in whose moth fly in Europe from late June to early August. The moths are nocturnal and come to light. But they can be roused from the herb layer during the day relatively easy. The moths are sometimes quite far away from their original habitat, such as found in cities on the light, suggesting that they are relatively joyful flight moths. The caterpillars hatch in September from the eggs and feed on the leaves of bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum ), cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos ), Labrador tea (Rhododendron tomentosum ) or blueberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus). They overwinter and pupate in May or June of the following year.

The life cycle of the subspecies Arichanna melanaria fraterna from Japan is slightly different. In the Kuzyu mountains of the island of Kyushu, the moths fly from mid-June to late August. The eggs are laid singly in the leaf litter or on dead leaves and dropped directly under the later food plants of the caterpillars. The eggs overwinter in the egg cases or the Eiraupen and Eiraupen hatch in April and May of the following year. The caterpillars feed kiusianum primarily on Rhododendron. After a very short development time of only about a month, the caterpillar pupates in the soil. Arichanna melanaria fraterna is considered kiusianum in Japan as a pest of Rhododendron.

Endangering

In Germany, the incidence varies considerably. In the Red List of Threatened Species noise Beer tensioner in Category 2 ( high risk ) is performed.

Taxonomy

The taxon Arichanna melanaria is currently divided into the following types:

  • Arichanna melanaria melanaria ( Linnaeus, 1758), in the largest part of the range
  • Arichanna melanaria fraternae Butler, 1878, Japan
  • Arichanna melanaria aciculata Inoue, 1946, Sakhalin

Others

The German Federal Post Office took the way in their design series "Endangered Moth" on.
