Ariel (angel)

Ariel (Hebrew אריאל: "Victims hearth of God " or " Lion of God " ) is used in the late Jewish teaching as a term of the Angel of land animals. In contrast, medieval literature it represents a spirit of the air.

Religious History and Mythology

" Ariel " is emerging as an epithet for Jerusalem in Isa 29.1 and 33.7. The later usual expectant etymology interprets this as a lion (Hebrew ari ) God ( Heb. al ). In translations of Symmachus and Aquila " Ariel " is used for the city Ariopolis where " Ariel " (Mars) was worshiped.

Perhaps the name comes from Ariel Zoroastrian Ahriman.

According to Scholem Ariel is the older name Jaldabaoths. Both names come together on a cameo with a löwengesichtigen figure. However, this interpretation is not undisputed. Yaldabaoth in any case is understood in the mythology of Ophites as chief archon (son of Chaos and Sophia ). ( In texts of Valentinian against " Yaldabaoth " is ignorant and not of intellectual but " psychological " nature. ) Ariel is also found in the Coptic Mythology: In the Pistis Sophia, Ariel punishes the lower world. Ariel is identified with the Demiurge, as well as with Yaldabaoth, Samael and Sakla. This Bestraferrolle similar to that of the Mandaean עור ( ' Ur) ( [ Lord of ] darkness formed, probably as a re-evaluation of Hebrew אור, ' or, light; cf. Babylonian Urru ). (Hence possibly stirs the connection with the Archangel Uriel ). In this destructive function has Ariel set in the near Nemesis, Sekhmet or Arioch.

In Judeo-Christian contexts Ariel is as Zornesengel other hand, more of a ruler and punisher of demons. His rank is most of the virtues or the Archangel stage and is thereby relatively high, which means so that Ariel different orders or choirs are assumed. He is considered the Angel of the Presence, of the face, as Prince Regent of the Jewish throne angelic hierarchy, Arelim; Ariel is also described as a cherub. Reporting is Ariel with lions head off, or as a demon ruling over the earth.

The Judeo-Christian Archangel Uriel is often associated with Ariel. Both connection is sometimes called " Auriel ". John Dee explains Ariel but as a composition of Anael and Uriel.

In mythologies Ariel is described as an angel with the function of dominion over the elements, especially the earth. After Thomas Heywood Ariel Prince reigns as water and as Lord over the earth. In other occult writings, Ariel said to have a mastery of fire or air. In some mystical texts Ariel is associated with dominion over the earth, with creation, elements of the North, elemental spirits and animals. When Moses Gaster Ariel is seen as an angel of healing and connected to the Archangel Raphael.

When Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim Ariel is the element of the earth assigned as Lion of God, and derived from Aries ( constellation Aries ).

Literary reception

In Pope's Rape of the Lock, there is a sylph named Ariel.

The as " light of God " summed up is Ariel in Shakespeare's The Tempest Prospero freed.

An inspiration for this was possibly John Dee, who claimed to have been visited by an angel named Uriel who gave him a magic crystal, with whose help he would understand the language of the angels. Other authors have claimed to have been guarded by Ariel as a guardian angel, such as Percy Shelly, Julie Y. Tortora 's, Linda Sue Nathanson, Steven J. Thayer.

Also in the novel The Angel of the West Window, Gustav Meyrink of there is such Ariel.

In Goethe's Faust, Ariel acts as the spirit of the air, which leads the elves.
