Arif Erdem ( born January 2, 1972 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish former international footballer.

Playing career

Association

The striker played 348 league games for Galatasaray, scoring 105 hits. He played 86 games in European competitions with 16 goals. Furthermore, he entered 60 times to the Turkish national team and met eleven times.

He became famous when he in 1993 in the memorable 3-3 draw at Old Trafford scored an important goal in the Champions League qualifying match against Manchester United, which Galatasaray is qualified for the main round. Otherwise, he was known besides his dangerous free kicks and sprints.

With his goal from the league game against Altay Izmir on 11 April 2003 Erdem scored his 100th Erstligator and made it so that in the 100 club of the highest Turkish league.

Except for half a season in Spain he played 14 years for Galatasaray. He was one of the major players in the first Turkish UEFA Cup victory in 2000. In the 2001 /02 season he was with 21 goals along with İlhan Mansız scorer in the Turkish league.

National

With the levy of the Turkish national team he reached the third place in the Football World Cup 2002 in Japan / South Korea. Erdem ended his career in 2005.

Coaching career

From 2006 to November 2011 he worked as an assistant coach at Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor. On 17 November 2011 he took over the team as head coach and left end of the season the club.
