Arild Andersen

Arild Andersen ( born October 27, 1945 in Lillestrøm ) is a Norwegian jazz bassist and composer.

Life

Anderson studied bass with George Russell, with whom he also appeared in the 1960s and 1970s, and Karel Netolicka. In the 1960s he appeared in Norway in 1968 at the Berlin Jazz Festival for the first time abroad. From 1967 to 1973 he was a member of the Jan Garbarek Quartet. He also worked with Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Hampton Hawes, Johnny Griffin, Sonny Rollins, Karin Krog, Sam Rivers, Paul Bley and Chick Corea.

Between 1972 and 1974 he held several times in New York City, where he with the Stan Getz Quartet, the Sam Rivers trio, Sheila Jordan, Steve Kuhn, Joe Farrell, David Friedman, Barry Altschul and Paul Bley occurred.

In 1974 he founded his own quartet, with whom he recorded four albums and toured Europe, and was with Radka Toneff in another band active. In 1980 he founded with Kenny Wheeler, Paul Motian, and Steve Dobrogosz a band in 1981 with a further Alphonse Mouzon, Bill Frisell and John Taylor, who at times also the guitarist John Abercrombie belonged. In 1982 The Arild Andersen Quintet with Jon Christensen, Jon Balke, Tore Brunborg and Nils Petter Molvaer, from which the band emerged Masqualero. With this he toured the U.S., Canada and Europe, and won three Norwegian Grammy.

In cooperation with the folk singer Kirsten Bråten Berg from 1988 he began to combine jazz with elements of Norwegian folk music. The outstanding result of this work was the work Sagn that also had great international success. In 1994 he composed the music for the stage version of the trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter " by Sigrid Undset.

In 1998 he formed with Markus Stockhausen and Patrice Héral the formation Jazz Trio MAP, temporarily Rypdal and Ferenc Snétberger participated as guests in the. In 2002, he composed three pieces for jazz trio and symphony orchestra, which were premiered by the jazz trio MAP and the Bergische Symphoniker. Since 2002 he is also working with the Danish pianist Carsten Dahl.
