The ARINC 424 specification defines a digital data format for exchanging navigation and communication data between the various stakeholders in the aviation industry, for example aviation authority → → data provider equipment manufacturers.

The introduction of computer -based navigation systems ( FMS) in airliners required a uniform data standard. ARINC 424 was developed in the 70s by AEEC and published by ARINC. The first version was officially released in May 1975. The moment aktualle version (January 2014), is ARINC 424-20. It was published in December 2011.

The default is not public, but can be purchased from ARINC.

Format

The format has a fixed length of 132 bytes per record ( record). In one record the various navigation information such as waypoints (English waypoints ), Beacon (English navaids ), airways (English airways ) or approach and departure routes (STAR, SID) are described.

In the ARINC 424 specification - in addition to the definition of the file format - a series of rules are defined that describe how the data should be interpreted. (eg naming conventions of waypoints )

According to ICAO Annex 15, the navigation data must be replaced in a 28 -day cycle, the AIRAC cycle (English Aeronautical Information Regulation And Control).

Use

Commercial Data Providers provide navigation data in ARINC 424 format.
