History

After the entrepreneur Reinhard Mohn in 1950 his Bertelsmann Lesering had (now The Club ) founded, which allowed members to obtain current books priced, he wanted to offer to extend the mid-50s on vinyl records. 1956, founded under the motto "For the good book has a beautiful sound," the Bertelsmann Schallplattenring. The young company, however, had to contend with starting difficulties. So the record companies wanted at first not awarded the necessary licenses to distribute the disks over the Schallplattenring. Initially, the repertoire included only a total of 72 titles by six performers, which made it difficult for the company to gain a foothold in the industry. In the 1970s, the record company founded subsidiaries in the Benelux countries and Spain (1970 ), France (1973 ), the USA ( 1975), and Mexico, the UK and in Switzerland ( 1977). At the beginning of the 1980s acquired Ariola Hansa music production. 1986 Sonopress began with the production of compact discs. A year later, the label Ariola with the UFA and Sonopress merged to BMG Ariola München GmbH.

In 2004, the label Ariola was part of the joint venture Sony BMG Music Entertainment. On 5 August 2008 the resolution was announced. Sony acquires the shares of Bertelsmann and will in future operate under the name of Sony Music Entertainment Inc. ( a subsidiary of Japan's Sony Corporation). Bertelsmann takes over the master rights of some " selected European music catalogs " from Sony BMG and performs the BMG brand as " licensing and management platform for the perception and marketing of music rights " on.
