Aristagoras

Aristagoras († 497 BC, fallen) was a tyrant of Miletus.

The son of the tyrant of Miletus Histiaeus took over his throne succession, as Histiaeus from the Persian king Darius I was brought to Susa, and went out to meet his father at comparable ambition, first as a faithful vassal of Persia.

He tried unsuccessfully to acquire through the recovery of the island of Naxos, which had broken away from Persia merits in the subsequent period. In order to forestall a Persian punishment, he planned 500 BC the Ionian revolt and a campaign against the Persian power metropolis Susa. The ambitious plans that have been taken in agreement with the demos of Miletus in attack but failed. The uprising was crushed by an army under the Persian commander Harpagos and reconquered Asia Minor Greek cities from the Persians.

Aristagoras then fled with a number of colonists to Thrace and there fell 497 BC during fighting against the Thracian tribe of the Edoner near the later Amphipolis.
