Aristide Hignard

Jean Louis Aristide Hignard ( born May 20, 1822 in Nantes, † March 20, 1898 in Vernon ) was a French composer.

Life and work

Aristide Hignard studied at the Paris Conservatory with Jacques Fromental Halévy, winning the cantata Emma et Eginhard 1850 Second Second Grand Prix de Rome. In 1851 he published his first comic opera Le Visionnaire.

During the 1850s Hignard composed four comic operas, including his childhood friend Jules Verne supplied the librettos. 1861 the operetta Les Musiciens de l' orchester was performed, together with Léo Delibes the Hignard and Camille Erlanger (and presumably Jacques Offenbach) had composed.

For a long time Hignard worked on his magnum opus, the five-act opera Hamlet on a libretto by Pierre de Garal. It was premiered in 1868 with great success. He also composed a number of songs (some to texts Verne ) as well as waltzes and melodies for the piano.
