Aristillus (crater)

54.99

Aristillus is an impact crater on the lunar front side in the plane of the Mare Imbrium, between the Montes Caucasus on its eastern border and the Montes Spitzbergen in the West. To the south west is the large crater Archimedes, between the putative sine Lunicus branch of the Mare Imbrium. To the northwest lie the crater Theaetetus and Cassini.

The sharp, eye-catching crater has a terraced wall and a central massif with three peaks. The light emanating from the crater ray system extends over 600 km.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Greek astronomer Aristyllos.
