Biography

Little is known about Fioravanti's early years. He was born in Bologna into a family of architects and hydraulic engineers.

He was known by new devices that he used in the city to rebuild the towers of the noble families. Between 1458 and 1467 he worked in Florence for Cosimo de ' Medici the Elder and in Milan. He then returned to his hometown. Here he created the plans for the renovation of the facade of the Palazzo del Podestà, which was not carried out until 1484-1494 under Giovanni II Bentivoglio in the Renaissance style. 1467 Fioravanti worked for King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary.

In 1475 he went at the invitation of Tsar Ivan III. to Russia. There he built 1475-1479 in the Moscow Kremlin, the magnificent Assumption Cathedral ( Uspensky Cathedral ), to which he had been inspired by the namesake church in Vladimir. The cathedral is now regarded as his most important work.

According to some sources he was of Ivan III. thrown into prison, as he wanted to return to Italy, and died in captivity. Other sources state that he participated as a military engineer and artillery commander in the campaigns against Novgorod ( 1477-1478 ), Kazan ( 1482 ) and Tver ( 1485 ).
