A Arithmometer is a mechanical calculating machine, to which the Frenchman Charles Xavier Thomas de Colmar (1785-1870) in 1820 received a patent. The Arithmometer is based on the principle of Leibniz machine. Mechanical calculators were by the end of the 1970s in use.

Another manufacturer of Arithmometern was Willgodt Theophil Odhner.

In Glashütte in Saxony, the Arthur Burkhardt & Cie produced from the 1870s, the first German calculating machine, the Burckhardt Arithmometer in series.
