The Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix, Arizona, United States housed, formerly the legislature of the territory and the state, as well as various agencies of the executive branch. These were relocated to surrounding buildings and the building now serves as the Arizona Capitol Museum.

Exhibitions

The exhibitions at the Arizona Capitol Museum show the history and culture of Arizona from the early days to today. Topics include the state symbols of Arizona, historical figures, natural history, the role of the state and history of Arizona's appointment to the State, the USS Arizona, and photographs by Edward S. Curtis.

History

The building was built as part of the efforts, which should show that the Arizona Territory was ready to become a federal state. The architectural competition was won by James Riely Gordon, whose design was based on a failed vorschlagt for the Mississippi State Capitol. After the original draft of the Capitol should be much larger, and include a more prominent rotunda and two large side wings for the two houses of the Legislature. Due to lack of funds, the building had to be smaller. In the representation of the state seal in the floor of the entrance hall, the cow is missing because an error was made in the preparation of the mosaic.

The first sod was made in 1898 and the building was opened in 1901. 1918 and 1938 additions were built on the west side in the same style, bringing the total floor area of 3,700 m² to 11,400 m² increased. Until the completion of the neighboring building in 1960, the building was the seat of the Senate and House of Representatives. The governor had his office here until 1974, the office tower of the government was completed. The state was dreaming at the time of a conversion of the building into a museum of the history of Arizona. After restoration it was opened in 1981 as a museum and is now visited by over 60,000 visitors. In the 1990s, U.S. $ 3 million were donated and the premises have been restored to their original condition. There were financial difficulties again, the work was stopped in some rooms on the 4th floor and it remained unfinished. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Architecture

The building was largely constructed from local materials, such as Granite and the copper dome. The design is for the desert climate of Arizona optimized, with thick masonry walls that isolate the interior, skylights, and round window Gaden, which keep the heat of the debating chambers of the chambers. The building is topped with a wind vane, is similar to the Nike of Samothrace and is seen through a skylight in the rotunda.

Transformation of the Capitol complex

Due to the rapidly increasing population of the Arizona Capitol complex is increasingly crowded. The buildings of the Senate and House of Representatives are in a poor state of construction. In the Senate building, there are always problems with the toilets and occasionally a burst pipe flooded the entire building. The Capitol itself is now used exclusively as a museum. Of the 60,000 visitors annually about 30,000 school children. Daber, many complaints have arisen that the buildings of the Senate and House of Representatives, they are compared with large bunkers, the beautiful view of the Capitol spoil. A working group, which was established by Congress in 2007, reported that the complex needs of today's "barely " is appropriate and this is "completely " inadequate for the future needs of the state. As a result, claims now come on, that the Capitol is being renovated or rebuilt so that it is the current size of Arizona and its heritage and culture meet and can satisfy the needs of the government.

Recent proposals call for the relocation of some offices and meeting rooms in the Capitol, while part continues to serve as a museum. For the building of the Senate and House of Representatives either a drastic renovation and expansion, or complete demolition and construction of new buildings is proposed. A recent study from Arizona State University calls for a comprehensive redesign of the entire complex and puts a plan in front of it.
