Arlebosc

Arlebosc is a commune with 342 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in Ardèche, in the Rhône -Alpes. The inhabitants are called Arlebossiens and Arlebosiennes.

Geography

Arlebosc lies in the valley of the river Doux, in the hills of the northern, not far from the Rhone. The place is 12 km from Lamastre, to Saint -Felicien there are also 12 km. The next largest city is Tournon -sur -Rhône with 15 kilometers to the northeast.

Neighboring municipalities are Bozas in the north, Boucieu -le- Roi in the east, Crestet in the south, as well as Empurany in the southwest.

History

Historically the village is connected with the legend of the bishop of Lyon St. Just, who is said to have converted the people of Arlebosc to Christianity in the 9th century. The name itself derives from the Celtic words ar ( wide valley ), le ( river level) and busc ( small forest ) from.

Until the 18th century the village was administered by the Diocese of Vienne, to the year 1789 by Notre -dame- du- Puy. But Roman finds have been close to a settlement during ancient times.

In the Middle Ages, the judges were appointed in place by the priest.

Culture and sights

Arlebosc has a variety of interesting buildings to offer. A feudal castle dating from the 12th century with a round tower that once served as a parish, as well as three other castles: Château des Romaneaux, the Château and the Château Malgaray Chazotte with real castle gate. At the edge of the village a Roman viaduct is to visit.

The restored church from the 16th century with its frescoes and stained glass windows depicting scenes from Saint- Sacrement, is worth seeing. It is also home eim Museum of Sacred Art, as a measuring cup and ivory sculptures from the 17th century.

The Chapel of Saint- Just, a popular pilgrimage site, and the view from the silver cross on the Serre are also popular destinations. The best view on the town can be enjoyed from Serre de la Croix d' Argent.
