Arlene McCarthy

Arlene McCarthy ( born October 10, 1960 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a British politician ( Labour Party ). Since the European elections of 1994 she is a Member of the European Parliament ( PES ).

Life

She studied in London, Manchester, Stuttgart and Clermont- Ferrand and was a visiting research fellow in Berlin. 1989 to 1992 she worked for the Socialist Group in the European Parliament from 1991 to 1992, she was Assistant Professor of Political Science at the Free University of Berlin. Then she was up to 1994 European commissioner in the district council of Kirklees. Since 1994 she has been Labour MP for the North West in the European Parliament. She is Chair of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection and a member of the EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly and the ACP countries.

The Member was known primarily as part of the directive on software patents. In June 2002, she published a report which campaigned very much for the patents.
