Artificial lake

The Arlesheimer lake in the natural area Freiburg bay is a body of water west of Freiburg im Breisgau on the boundary of the district Tiengen. The lake has open water areas of ca that contain swimming and diving plants, reeds and sedge - reed 8 ha and silting areas. In places, the water is also surrounded by a swamp forest. The state forest in the Arlesheimer lake is administratively a district of St. Georgen affiliated.

The lake is named after the Swiss community and the former prince-bishop's seat Arlesheim in Basel and recalls historical relations between Tiengen and resided in Basel Arlesheim Catholic cathedral chapter, which until 1806 held the patronage of the Protestant Tienger village church of the Reformation.

History

The lake was created in the period from March 1, 1960 to December 1, 1960 as a quarry in the course of gravel extraction for the construction of the A5 from Karlsruhe to Basel. He was then extended in 1964 and 1966, while the bays and the two islands emerged. He is the only one of the 40 new lakes, created during the motorway construction of the A5, which has been a nature reserve. The entire area is fenced since 1967. A peculiarity in the formation of this lake was, which was not as usual pushed the topsoil after the dredging in the lake and he was initially very low in nutrients. This situation has changed with the many water birds that have colonized the lake, and the moss forest springing Bach and the foliage of entry.

On December 30, 1966, the lake lying in the moss forest was expelled at the instigation of the Bund as a nature reserve with a size of 22.8 ha and is registered with the government of Freiburg under the reserve number 3,070. The Wpda ID is 81315 and it is classified in category IV.

Due to the high number of birds there proven Arlesheimer lake is recognized as European bird sanctuary.
