Armadale Castle

Armadale Castle is the former mansion of the Scottish clan MacDonald. The largely dilapidated castle is located between the towns of Ardvasar and Kilmore on the Sleat peninsula in the extreme south of the Isle of Skye.

History

The MacDonalds resided from 1650 to 1690 in Armadale in two farm houses. In 1690 they moved their residence to Duntulm Castle in the north of Skye. 1790 allowed the communities to build a mansion in Armadale. 1815, the property was expanded in the historicist style, designed by James Gillespie Graham, but largely destroyed by fire in 1855. Parts of the ruins were replaced by a new building by the architect David Bryce. 1925 left the clan Armadale, and the complex of buildings fell into disrepair.

Armadale Castle today

Of all the three phases of construction parts are received - which built 1815 and after 1855, however, parts of the building in ruins. Usable only the north wing of the building dating from 1790. It was restored in the 1970s after the Clan Donald Lands Trust Armadale Castle and the surrounding grounds had bought in 1971. Today Armadale Castle is a tourist attraction mainly because of the restored gardens. Add originally dating from the 17th century complex there are numerous exotic plants that grow here because of the phase caused by the mild Gulf Stream climate. The building sections obtained are used for weddings. On the grounds of the castle is also home to the Museum of the Isles.
