Armenian Genocide Memorial in Larnaca

The Armenian Genocide Memorial Larnaca in Cyprus is a monument dedicated to the martyrs and survivors of the genocide of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire 1915-1922. It is located on the waterfront of the city of Larnaca and marks the place where thousands of Armenian refugees and displaced persons who fled the atrocities of genocide, landed in Cyprus ( Larnaca port ). The memorial represents the gratitude of the Armenian nation to the people of Cyprus for their generosity and support for the Armenian refugees.

Construction

The construction of the memorial was a joint project between the governments of Cyprus and Armenia, and was initiated by MPs Bedros Kalaydjian, the only representatives of the Armenian community in Cyprus. The memorial was funded primarily by the government of Cyprus. It was designed by architects and urban planners Angelos Demetriou, using the architect Michael THRASSOU. It consists of a bronze monument, which is surrounded by rows of pomegranate and cypress trees. The four granite plaques on the base of the sculpture ( the Momument in Armenian, Greek, Turkish and English descriptive ) were provided by the government of Armenia. The monument itself was created by Greek artist Georgios Kalakallas.

The square in front of the memorial was funded by the Foundation Kalaydjian and connects the Armenian Völkemord Memorial with Larnaca's main promenade.

On 24 November 2006, during the state visit of the President of Armenia in Cyprus, the foundation stone of the memorial of President Robert Kocharian was laid.

Inauguration

On 28 May 2008 the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Demetris Christofias, the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Larnaca inaugurated, officially. The mourning ceremony was accompanied by the Ambassador of Armenia, the Mayor of Larnaca, the Archbishop of the Armenian community in Cyprus, members of parliament and thousands of Greek Cypriots and Armenians.
