Armenian illuminated manuscripts

The Armenian book painting was how the Armenian art in general, but in the Byzantine and Syrian tradition. The most famous Armenian illuminator, Toros Roslin, lived in the 13th century.

The library Matenadaran in Yerevan houses the largest collection of Armenian manuscripts splendor, a UNESCO World Documentary Heritage of UNESCO since 1997. Among the most important objects include the Etchmiadzin Gospels of 989 with ivory book covers from the 6th century and the Mughni Gospels to 1060.

The second largest collection of Armenian manuscripts preserved in the James Church in the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem. More Armenian illuminated manuscripts are available in the British Library, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the libraries of the Mechitarists in Venice and Vienna and other major collections in Europe and in the United States. The University of California, Los Angeles ( UCLA) preserves among other things an Armenian magnificent manuscript from the 14th century on.
