Armidale, New South Wales

Armidale is a city in the Australian state of New South Wales and is located about halfway between Sydney and Brisbane. It is located in the New England region in the Northern Tablelands at about 980 m altitude.

Description

Armidale was founded in 1849 and has 19 485 inhabitants. The name comes from George James Macdonald, in the late 1830s, the Commissioner of Crown Lands, and is an altered spelling of Armadale on the Scottish Isle of Skye, the seat of the clan of the Macdonalds.

The city is home to the University of New England. It also has two cathedrals, St Peter's Anglican Cathedral of the Anglican Church and The Catholic Cathedral of St Mary and St Joseph Roman Catholic Church. Further facilities in the Armidale 's highest airport in Australia. Armidale can be reached by train on the route Newcastle and Toowoomba on the New England Highway.

Armidale is center and the seat of the Regional Administration of the Armidale Dumaresq Council.
