Armin Knab

Armin Knab ( born February 19, 1881 in Neuschleichach, today part of Oberaurach, Lower Franconia, † 23 July 1951 in Bad Woerishofen, Allgäu) was a German composer, musician and lawyer.

Life

In the school house to Kitzingen, where his father had been transferred as a teacher and head of the Catholic Boys' Choir - Alumnat a year after the birth of his son, the boy grew up. He attended the "Royal Latin School and Progymnasium ". After graduating from high school in 1900 Knab studied in Würzburg and Munich law and musicology. In 1907 he passed the state examination.

From 1913 was Armin Knab magistrate in Kitzingen, and for many years a judge in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, in Fürth and last in Würzburg. Since the beginning of his legal career, he was recognized by his professional obligations so that he fell because of the double burden of being the one hand, a lawyer and on the other hand a passionate musician in a life crisis, but he overcame. From about 1920 Armin Knab became known songs in the youth and school music movement. After a brief interaction in Fürth, he returned in 1927 to Würzburg back until he was called to Berlin. From 1934 Armin Knab was finally able to devote himself entirely to music as a teacher of music theory and composition at the State College of Music Education and Church Music in Berlin.

After the destruction of his home in Berlin in 1943 Knab spent the last years of the war and the postwar period in Kitzingen. When he finally got an apartment in the spring of 1951 in Würzburg, he could not settle in. He died in 1951 during a spa stay in Bad Woerishofen. His grave is located at the old cemetery in Kitzingen.

Works

Knab is especially known for his piano and lute songs, but also choral songs and oratorios. He also set to music poems by, among others, Goethe, Hölderlin and Alfred Mombert. In particular, the reuse of old musical instruments and old folk music but also the promotion of a cappella singing to his heart.

His works are frequently traversed by his personal impressions and experiences of the Franconian countryside. This is particularly in his book, hiking and traveling in Franconia expressed.

  • Nazi award: 1940 Max Reger Prize ( formerly Main Franconian art price) from Würzburg Gauleiter Otto Helmuth.
  • In 1966 the school was named Kitzingen Armin - Knab High School.
  • The Paula Yvonne Knab (1892-1985) widow founded in 1978 Armin - Knab Foundation for the Promotion of gifted students from the areas of solo singing and composition. The Foundation is managed by the Academy of Music Würzburg eV at the Academy of Music. The foundation also awards prizes for music promotion to outstanding graduates of Armin - Knab -Gymnasium.
  • In Armin Knabs birthplace, the former school of Neuschleichach - Oberaurach, a meeting was set up.
