Description

The flat sand and dune island is about 9 km long, between 0.1 and 1.5 km wide and has an area of several square kilometers. It is just like the neighboring beach islands formed by sediments that were removed at the cliffs of the western Algarve by erosion and deposited further east in the course of time here because of the prevailing flow conditions. The island on the south by the Atlankikküste a continuously over the entire length extending wide sandy beach with a landward dune belt, which has only the low depth of a few meters and barely vegetation. Are located on the north, the mainland side facing the predominantly economically unused swamp and marsh areas.

The eastern part of the island is also known as Ilha da Fuseta or Ilha da Fuzeta. Since both parts of the island are connected only by an approximately 100 -meter-wide isthmus, it seems likely that there were originally two separate islands that were connected to each other over the years through land appreciation.

Capital is the same settlement Armona in the far west of the island. Here also, the vast majority of the estimated more than 1,000 permanent residents live (exact dates are not available ). The village has a ferry terminal and smaller sandy beaches where also anchor the fishing boats of the islanders. From here, a boardwalk for pedestrians to South Beach. Towards the east, there are no paved roads or paths on the island. Approximately 6 km east of Armona is located at the narrowest point of the island, a further unspecified settlement. Many of its buildings, mostly holiday houses were built close to the beach without permission. While some were destroyed by a flood, more illegally built buildings have been removed on behalf of the administration.

Economy and Tourism

Main industry was until a few years almost exclusively fishing. Only in recent years tourism also plays a role economically. There are (so far ) on the island neither flat nor mass tourism, which is not least due to the somewhat remote location. From Faro airport, the distance in a straight line is only 16 km, but there is neither a shuttle bus connection still transfer- public transport lines ). For the as yet rather limited number of Indidividualtouristen accommodations in private homes, guest houses or holiday homes are available. Closest to your location offers a camping site with attached cottage settlement. Furthermore, there are some catering establishments such as restaurants, bars and cafes as well as smaller scale opportunities for sporting activities.

The island has no significant sights. Their main attraction is the kilometelange and fine sandy beach which is not crowded even in high season, if in addition to stationary guests also visit day-trippers Armona and has yet secluded and lonely sections.
