Armored Box Launcher

The Armored Box Launcher was a launch system for missiles of the type BGM -109 Tomahawk the United States Navy. It has been used on the ships of the Iowa class, the Virginia - class, and on some ships of the Spruance - class and the USS Long Beach ( CGN- 9).

Each container contained four missiles that could be fired immediately. The particular advantage lay in the heavy armor that protected the missile against possible enemy action. The biggest drawback of the system was that it could not be reloaded at sea.

Today, the system is no longer in use, it was replaced by the Vertical Launching System. The cruise missile used today are therefore not compatible with the system.
