Army general

General of the Army is in a number of countries, the highest ranking officer in the rank group of generals that may be awarded in peacetime. The comparable ranks of the Armed Forces is the General ( NATO rank code OF- 9, four- star general ). The Army General is not to be confused with the General of the Army ( USA), a rank higher than five-star rank (OF -10).

Germany

Armed forces until 1945

The rank designation army general has never existed in the German armed forces until 1945. However, here the comparable four- star rank (OR -9) would have been Colonel-General.

In the National People's Army, the German People's Police and the Ministry of State Security was the army general of the highest rank of general.

The Army General was also the military rank of the Minister of National Defense of the GDR (since 1959 ) and the Minister of State Security ( since 1980) and the Minister of the Interior and Chief of the German People's Police ( since 1984).

In the case of appointment of a naval officer to the Defence Ministers of the GDR would be the same so that the carriage was connected to the Commodore of the People's Navy.

Poland

In the Polish Armed Forces General of the Army (Polish Generał armii ) was introduced as the highest ranking generals in 1951, which was maintained until 1991 and has been classified with OF- 9 rank according to NATO Rank Code. After this time, the rank was changed to the NATO usual term general, the Distinktionsabzeichen were retained.

Russia

The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have adopted the four- star general in 1991 from the armed forces of the Soviet Union with the name Generál armii (Russian генерал армии ). The Russian army general corresponds to the NATO rank OF- ninth (OF stands officer for the English name. )

In the Red Army of the Soviet Union, the General ranks were reintroduced on May 7, 1940. General of the Army (Russian Генерал армии / General Armii ) was the second highest rank in the group of generals. The order was Soviet general ranks since 1940 and 1943:

  • Major General, in front of brigade commander ( KomBrig )
  • Lieutenant-General, before division commander ( KomDiv )
  • Colonel-General, before Corps Commander ( KomKor )
  • General of the Army, Army Commander before 2nd rank
  • Chief Marshal (from 1943), in front of army commander 1st rank
