Army of Northeastern Virginia

The Army of Northeastern Virginia ( Army in northeastern Virginia ) was the first major unit of the United States Army in the Civil War in the eastern theater of war.

Although called army, they consisted only of military units in corps strength. Her first commander was Brigadier General Irvin McDowell. Under his leadership, they defeated the Confederate Potomac Army in the First Battle of Bull Run.

She was then in the military district of Potomac, later transferred to the Army and the Military District Potomac.

On March 8, 1862, it was renamed on orders President Lincoln in Potomac Army.
