Arnavatnsheiði

The Arnarvatnsheiði is a plateau in the west of Iceland.

Geography

The plane is on the municipalities of Borgarbyggð and Hunathing vestra northeast of the Reykholtsdalur and north of Húsafell. To the east is the Langjökull.

Well known is the area especially for the many lakes where you can fish for trout in the summer. There are three things in the Icelandic landscape, which are considered uncountable: the lakes of Arnarvatnsheiði, the islands in the Breiðafjörður and the mound in Vatnsdalur.

The climate is here, as elsewhere in the Icelandic highlands quite rough.

In the southwest of Arnarvatnsheiði are in the lava field Hallmundarhraun, which dates from the 9th century caves: eg Surtshellir and the cave Víðgelmir. In the caves there is a chaotic mess erupted lava boulders, stones and rocks. Access can sometimes be dangerous because of icing. In these caves often resided in former times to outlaw who had been excluded for crimes in Icelandic society.
