Arnd Schmitt

Arnd Schmitt ( born July 13, 1965 in Heidenheim ) is a former German fencer who won two Olympic gold medals.

Arnd Schmitt began his career in Tauberbischofsheim, but switched early to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. In 1985 he went as a German junior champion with the epee team to the World Cup and won his first world title there. In 1986 he was re- team world champion and 1987 he won second place. Schmitt won in 1987 for the first time the German Individual Championship. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988, he won gold in the individual competition, the final, he defeated the Frenchman Philippe Riboud. With the team Schmitt lost six days later in the final against the French and was awarded silver.

In the 1990 World Cup Schmitt received the bronze medal in the individual competition and was awarded the German team fourth. The team at the World Fencing Championships 1991 bronze medal a year later won. 1991 Schmitt won for the second time the title of German Champion. At the Olympic Games in 1992 Schmitt difference in individual competition from an early stage and was listed at number 29. A year later at the World Championships in Athens Schmitt won bronze in the individual event and silver in the team. 1994 Schmitt won his third German championship title at the European Championships he won silver in the individual. In 1995 he was single European champions. At the World Cup in 1995 Schmitt was ninth in the individual standings. With the team he won for the third time after 1985 and 1986, the world champion title. At the Olympic Games in 1996 Schmitt was standard-bearer of the German delegation at the opening ceremony. He was the tenth single, the team missed out on Fourth just a medal.

1997 Schmitt was second with the team at the World Championships. At the European Championships 1999, he won bronze in the team. The 1999 World Cup was held in Seoul, where Schmitt was eleven years earlier become Olympic champion in singles. And Schmitt actually won the individual competition, with the team he finished second. In his fourth Olympic Games 2000 in Sydney Schmitt was the end of his career with the team fifth.

Schmitt was during his career for many years active speaker. He received his doctorate in 1999. In 2002 he was a member of the National Olympic Committee. After the end of his active sports career of the dentist is among other things, a board member of the Sports Foundation NRW.
