Arne Nordheim

Arne Nordheim ( born June 20, 1931 in Larvik, † June 5, 2010 in Oslo) was a Norwegian composer.

Life

Nordheim studied from 1948 to 1952 theory and organ at the conservatory in Oslo, later he took composition lessons there with Karl Andersen, Bjarne Brustad, Conrad Baden and even with Vagn Holmboe in Copenhagen. Nordheim was one of the first Norwegian composers of contemporary art movements after the Second World War opened. In 1955 he dealt in Paris with Musique concrète and 1959 in Bilthoven with electronic music. The latter should be working particularly dominant in the 1960s. 1960 to 1968 he wrote music reviews for the Oslo newspaper Dagbladet. 1967-1972 worked Nordheim repeated at Studio Eksperymentale in Warsaw, where he produced several of his electro- acoustic works. From the 1980s, also works for orchestra produced more and more.

Nordheim played a prominent role as a member of many relevant organizations and bodies in Norwegian musical life. In 1974 he took over the chairmanship of the Norwegian Society of Composers. From 1982 lived in caves Nordheim, honor residence located in Oslo by the Norwegian state. In 1997 he was made an honorary member of the ISCM. Among the accolades received by Nordheim, include the Music Prize of the Nordic Council (1972 ), the Prix Italia (1980 ), the Honorary Prize of the Norwegian Cultural Council ( 1990) and 1993, the Henrik Steffens Prize.

Work

Nordheim composed for almost every musical genre: instrumental works of the chamber music to symphonic music, vocal music, electronic music, film music, stage works (including ballets ) and compositions for broadcasting. Getting more attention in Norway he found in 1959 with the song cycle Aftonland internationally with the Canzona for Orchestra ( 1961). Some of his works combine electronic and traditional instruments. In 1994 he wrote the opening music for the Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer. To the resulting commissioned by the Bach Academy Stuttgart collective composition Requiem of Reconciliation (1995 ) contributed Nordheim at the Confutatis.
