Arne Treholt

Arne Treholt ( born December 13, 1942) is a former Norwegian politician (Labour Party ) and diplomat.

Life

Earlier in his career he worked as a journalist for the Social Democratic newspaper Dagsavisen. From 10 March 1976 to January 1, 1979, he was Secretary of State for Law of the Sea and fishing limits. He then went as Counsellor of the Norwegian UN delegation to New York. From 1983, he was press secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

His father Thorstein Treholt was also a social democratic politician and Minister of Agriculture in the governments Bratteli I (1971 /72) and II ( 1973-1976 ).

Treholt 2004 published his autobiography titled gray areas.

Espionage accusation

On January 20, 1984, the Norwegian police Treholt arrested on suspicion of spying for the Soviet Union. He was arrested at Oslo Airport on charges of wanting to meet a Soviet agent in Vienna. Many people defended his actions, regardless of today open full clarification of the incident. Arne Treholt was convicted in 1985 for treason and espionage for the Soviet Union to a term of imprisonment of 20 years. After eight years, In 1992 he was released early from prison and in the meantime emigrated to Russia. Treholt now lives in Cyprus. He never acknowledged his guilt and saw his imprisonment and his conviction as great miscarriage of justice. Recent searches Norwegian journalists have sown doubts about the official version to date and brought a retrial this week.
