Arnett Cobb

Arnett Cobb ( born August 10, 1918 as Arnette Cleophus Cobbs in Houston / Texas, † March 24, 1989 ) was an American jazz saxophonist.

Life and work

Cobb first played the piano and violin, and later tenor saxophone. He became a professional musician in 1933 and began his career as a member of the bands of Frank Davis and Chester Boone. In 1936 he moved to Milt Larkin, where he stayed for six years. In 1942, he became the successor of Illinois Jacquet in Lionel Hampton's orchestra. His version of Flying Home No. 2 Hamptons band was a hit.

In 1947, Cobb own band, but his career was interrupted by surgery and by a serious car accident in 1956 in the following year. In 1959 he began performing again; in the 1960s he led his own bands different in Texas. Since 1973, he again played a reinforced recordings and undertook major tours in 1988 and worked in Europe with Jimmy Heath and Joe Henderson. In 1973 he received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumentalist.

Arnett Cobb, whose rugged play at Herschel Evans and Illinois Jacquet recalls is also heard on records by Herbie Fields, Hampton, Wynonie Harris and Roy Milton, also on a series of recordings under his own name.
