Arnold Diestel

Arnold Friedrich Georg Diestel ( born March 2, 1857 in Valparaíso, Chile, † January 3, 1924 in Hamburg) was a Hamburg senator and mayor.

The father of Arnold Diestel was a merchant and hannoveranischer consul in Chile, before the family returned to Hamburg in 1858. Diestel spent his school years in Hamburg and studied law in Freiburg and Berlin. 1883 Diestel was admitted to the service of the Hamburg administration, where he worked under John Versmann. Versmann patronized him so that he 1895 Senate secretary in 1891 settled laborers of the entire Senate, and on June 5. On April 21, 1899 Diestel Senatssyndicus, he was mainly under Johann Georg Moenckeberg in the financial deputation active (→ Hamburg Senate from 1861 to 1919 ). After Mönckebergs death on March 27, 1908 Diestel was elected on April 6, 1908 Senator, and he was Director of Finance deputation.

After the election, the first free and democratically elected citizenship on March 16, 1919 Diestel was, who was close to the Liberals to the German Democratic Party, without being a party member in the new Senate under Werner von Melle and Otto Stolten re-elected (→ Hamburg Senate 1919 - 1933). Following the resignation of Gustav Sthamer on February 13, 1920 Diestel was elected on February 14, 1920 First Mayor. Diestel concentrated mainly on financial and administrative matters, on January 3, 1924 Diestel died in office.

After Arnold Diestel the thistle street in Hamburg- Wohldorf- Ohlstedt is named.

Diestel was a member of the Corps Hasso Borussia Freiburg since 1877.
