Arnulf of Lisieux

Arnulf of Lisieux († August 31, 1184 at the Abbey of Saint -Victor ) was a French bishop.

Life and career

He was brought up by his brother, the Bishop of Sées and studied canon law in Rome. He wrote in defense of the Pope Innocent II a letter that was directed against Gerard, bishop of Angouleme, a supporter of Antipope Anacletus II ( Peter Leonis ).

In 1141 he was made Bishop of Lisieux. He accompanied Louis VII in 1147 on the second crusade, Pope Alexander III. during the schism loyalty. He also encouraged many bishops to defend the independence of the Church against the aspirations of Henry of Anjou.

In the conflict between Thomas Beckett and Henry II, he stood on the side of the king and took over, after the murder of Beckett's the Verteiddiung of the king before the Pope. However, around the year 1181 he lost the favor of the king and at times also the favor of the Pope Lucius III.

A little later he gave his episcopate because of his age and of fatigue and retired to the Abbey of St. Victor in Paris, in which he died.

From Arnulf of Lisieux, a collection of letters are delivered as some poems.

He was an uncle of Hugh Nonant, which was 1185-1198, the Bishop of Coventry.
