Arnulf of Montgomery

Arnulf de Montgomery (c. 1068, † 1118/22 ), was an Anglo -Norman knight, who played a role in the history of England, Wales and Ireland. He is a member of the house of Montgomery, father of all Scottish Montgomerie and an ancestor of Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery.

Origin and family

Arnulf de Montgomery was the youngest son of Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury and the Mabile de Bellême. He had at least ten other siblings, including Hugh of Montgomery, 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury, Robert of Bellême, 3rd Earl of Shrewsbury, and Roger Poitevin, Count of La Marche.

Life

In 1090 he built with his older brother Robert Pembroke Castle in South Wales, one of the most impressive Norman castles in England. 1093 King William II of England rewarded the efforts of Arnulf of Montgomery with the rule in Pembroke; some historians see this act as the investiture as Earl of Pembroke, although an initial investiture of the earldom of Pembroke until 1138 by King Stephen of England to Gilbert de Clare ( 1100-1147 / 48) has been made.
