Arpad, the Gypsy (Original Title: Arpad, le tzigane ) was a German -Hungarian- French television series that ran in 26 episodes on the eve of the ZDF program 1973-1974.

Through the romantic and exciting adventures of the hero Arpad (a type of Hungarian " Robin Hood" ) and his great love Rilana the series quickly became popular. French actor Robert Etcheverry was the series on the Star and the British actress Edwige Pierre posted here their greatest success. Even the theme song by Paul Piot was quite well known.

Was also the Eastern European first name Rilana a popular name for newborn girls in Germany by the success of the series.

In April 2005, the first six episodes of this series released on DVD; in November 2009, eventually followed by the publication of all 26 episodes in a DVD box.

Action

The TV series is in Hungary and begins in 1699, during the Kuruzenaufstände against the Austrians. An exact time is not mentioned below, the bulk of the action but must fall of its logic ago in the time of the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi ( 1703-1711 ).

The Austrians Hungary freed from the rule of the Ottomans, but turn out to be their turn as a brutal oppressor. Hungary's population rebelled. In the TV series, the leadership initially assumes an uncouth Blacksmith, Episode 9 from Season 1 then the Prince Ferenc II Bekeczy. Opponent of the insurgents is always just " General " called Austrian general who will stop at any of the most common guile.

The Roma people, and with him Arpad, is caught in the crossfire and is treated by both warring parties with disdain. An exception is the prudent prince Bekeczy which includes me Arpad friendship. He convinced Arpad, to fight on the side of Hungary against Austria - what this henceforth takes by cunning and humor, without shedding blood. Arpad is assisted by the beautiful Rilana, a Roma and Arpad's great love. Despite his efforts, many ethnic Hungarians despise him continue as supposed strangers and "Gypsy ". Even his own people see Arpad use critical because he unintentionally repeatedly provoked revenge attacks of the Austrians at the Roma.

All troubles and struggles remain ultimately in vain, as the main characters fall into an ambush of the Austrian General: Prince Bekeczy ends in captivity, Arpad and Rilana be mortally wounded.

Background

  • The figure of the fictitious Prince Ferenc II Bekeczy is loosely inspired by the historical figure of Prince Rákóczi, with whom she shares even the name Ferenc ( "Franz" ).
  • The film character of the scheming Belgian captain Landemal reminiscent of the historically authentic officer François de Longueval (1647-1719) from Belgium, who betrayed the plans of Prince Rákóczi uprising of the Habsburg emperor in 1701.
  • The uniforms of the Austrian shown are typical of the period with the exception of the general's regalia; these cited erroneously the uniform style of the late 18th century.
