Arphaxed Loomis

Arphaxed Loomis ( born April 9, 1798 in Winsted, Connecticut, † September 15, 1885 in Little Falls, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1837 and 1839 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Arphaxed Loomis was born shortly before the end of the 18th century in Winsted in Litchfield County. The family moved to New York in 1801 and settled on a farm in the Town of Salisbury in Herkimer County. He attended community schools and Fairfield Academy. He then studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1822 in Albany, and then began to practice the same year in Sackets Harbor. He returned back to Salisbury in 1825 and from there he moved in the same year to Little Falls, where he continued to practice as a lawyer. Between 1828 and 1836 he worked as guardianship and estate Richter ( surrogate ) in Herkimer County. As Commissioner, he was responsible in 1834 for the study of state prisons. Between 1835 and 1840 he was a district judge in Herkimer County.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1836 for the 25th Congress Loomis was in the 16th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Abijah junior man on March 4, 1837. Since he gave up for reelection in 1838, he retired after March 3, 1839, from from the Congress. As a Congressman he had presided over the Committee on Patents.

Loomis sat in the years 1841 and 1842 in the New York State Assembly. In 1846 he took part in the Constitutional Convention of New York. He was in 1847 a member of the Commission which revised the pleadings and proceedings in civil lawsuits, shortened and simplified. Then he sat in the years 1853 and 1854, again in the New York State Assembly. As a delegate, he participated in the years 1861 and 1863 to the Democratic State Convention. On September 15, 1885, he died in Little Falls and was then buried in the Church Street Cemetery.
