Arri PL

Arri PL ( PL for engl. Positive lock) is a lens mount system used for 16 mm, 35 mm and digital cinema cameras.

The port was developed by ARRI in 1980 as the successor to the previous one, introduced in 1965 bayonet lock, but is not compatible with older lens ports Arri, because it has a larger diameter. Older Arri port systems can be connected with an adapter to PL. A special feature is the ability to attach lenses in four different, rotated by 90 ° orientations to the camera, so as to bring the controls and indicators for the situation at optimum positions.

The PL- connection has been successfully established since its introduction at Photokina in 1982 and is available from numerous manufacturers of cinema cameras, such as:

  • Arri with the mechanical 35mm Kameria ARRI 535,
  • Aaton, the mechanical 35 mm camera 35 and the mechanical Aaton 16 mm camera Aaton XTR
  • Red Digital Cinema Camera Company with the digital 35 mm camera Red One
  • P S Technik, with her digital 16 mm camera SI -2K and the Weisscam

The variant LDM -1 is compatible with most fixed focal lengths, LDM -2 with lenses that use an intermediate port ( Angénieux, Cooke zoom lenses, Zeiss Tessar 300 mm).

35 mm adapters make it possible to realize the depth of field of the 35mm range with a conventional video camera, but this may be accompanied by some loss of light aperture and focus.
