Arromanches-les-Bains
Arromanches -les- Bains is a commune in the French department of Calvados ( Basse -Normandie ) with 567 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).
Geography
Arromanches lies on the coast of the English Channel, about eight kilometers northeast of Bayeux and 25 kilometers north- west of Caen. The neighboring communities include Saint -Côme -de- Fresné and Tracy- sur -Mer.
History
When the Allied landings in Normandy during the Second World War in 1944 Arromanches was the land portion Gold Beach. After landing was off the coast of one of the two artificial harbors ( Mulberry B) built, were brought ashore over the troops and supplies. Remains of this port can be seen today.
Economy
Main source of income of the town is tourism. In addition to a campsite numerous sports and recreational activities are offered.
