Arrondissement of Saint-Martin-Saint-Barthélemy

The Arrondissement of Saint- Martin -Saint- Barthélemy ( also Arrondissement des Îles du Nord ) is a former district of the French overseas departments of Guadeloupe. It was established in 1963 and included the municipalities of Saint -Martin and Saint -Barthélemy with the cantons of Saint- Martin -1, Saint -Martin and Saint- Barthélemy 2. As the only French arrondissement, it had no capital; the sub-prefecture was located in Marigot and had a branch office in Gustavia.

At the last census of 1999, the arrondissement 35.930 inhabitants in an area of 74.2 km ² and a population density of 484 inhabitants per km ². With the spin-off of the two former municipalities as independent entities (COM), 2007, the arrondissement of Saint- Martin was - Saint -Barthélemy dissolved. Nevertheless, the state can continue to be represented in Saint- Martin and Saint -Barthélemy by the Prefect of Guadeloupe; support him délégué instead of a sub-prefect of Préfet.
