Arsenic trichloride is a chemical compound of arsenic and chlorine with the formula AsCl3. It is a colorless, oily liquid which fumes in the air.
Production and representation
Arsenic trichloride can be recovered by combustion of arsenic in chlorine gas:
The starting material can also arsenic (III ) oxide are used, is passed through the anhydrous hydrogen chloride at 180-200 ° C:
A further possibility is the production of arsenic trioxide, sulfur and chlorine.
Properties
Arsenic trichloride decomposes on heating and under influence of light. Humidity in the air it forms corrosive fumes of hydrogen chloride and toxic arsenic (III ) oxide. It reacts violently with strong oxidizing agents, water, and bases.
Use
Arsenic trichloride is used for etching and burnishing of metals.
