Art Academy of Latvia

The Art Academy of Latvia ( lett: Latvijas Mākslas Academia ) is an autonomous art school in Riga draw with the right to their own constitution and study programs. Director since 2007, Professor Alexey Naumovs.

Program

The Academy offers five fields of study:

  • Visual art with paintings, graphics, textile art;
  • Visual plastic arts - sculpture, ceramics, glass art;
  • Design - functional design, metal design, environmental art, Fashionable Art;
  • Audio -visual media arts - visual communication, scenography;
  • History of art - visual art and cultural history and theory, restoration.

History

On August 20, 1919, the Art Academy of Latvia was established by a decision of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Latvia and Vilhelms Purvītis appointed director. 1921 began training with 7 master schools. The first constitution of the Academy in 1924 accepted and adopted by Parliament. Among the changing occupation forces during World War II and then the training could be maintained at the Academy. After re- Latvian independence in 1990 attempted a balance between traditional artisan orientation and adaptation to the recent developments in the Western world was to be found.

Building

Purvītis had chosen in 1919, designed by Wilhelm Bockslaff Exchange Commercial School as a teaching building. After a long tough negotiations with the owners but no agreement was reached, so that the Academy was housed until 1940 in a former junior high school on Kronwald Boulevard 1. After the Soviet occupation of Latvia, the institution was moved by decree in the original ausersehene building on the Esplanade next to the Art Museum, where it is located today. The neo-Gothic building has a brick facade, which also reflects the internal structure of the building. The interior design includes elements of Art Nouveau. Currently is restored to its original state during the Soviet era altered interior.
