Art Gallery of South Australia

The Art Gallery of South Australia is located in Adelaide and, with 38,000 plants to the largest art collections in Australia.

Collection

The collection was founded in 1881 ranges from ancient Roman to the present time. It includes works from Australia, Europe, North America and Asia. On display are paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, artistically designed textiles, ceramics, glass and metalwork and jewels.

The exhibited works of Australian art comprises of 1800 and Aboriginal art. Shown is the art from Europe from the late 15th - century to the present day, and also works of art from the UK and from 12 Asian countries, including Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.

1922 began this art museum was the first museum in Australia to collect plants for the art of photography. The museum operates the only museum in Australia a space for Islamic art.

Buildings

The art museum there since 1881 and the first building of this museum was opened in the early 1900s. In 1936 the two Melrose Wings and another wing was added in 1962 on the back as well as in March 1996, the West Wing.

In the West Wing, the exhibition of contemporary art, a book shop, restaurant and other facilities is located. The Art Gallery is located on the North Terrace and nearby are State Library of South Australia, South Australian Museum and University of Adelaide.
