Art Tower Mito

The Art Tower Mito (short: ATM) is part and nickname of the city's art museum in Mito (水 戸 芸 术 馆, Mito Geijutsu -kan ) in Japan.

Building

The complex consists of several buildings, which are grouped around a square and contain exhibition areas and function rooms and a cinema. One of the buildings is the 100 meter high tower, which was designed by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki from December 1986. The completion and opening was in February 1990. The facade is made of steel triangles that rotate in the form of a helix to the top. In the tower there are four usable floors. Accessible is the tower of an entrance hall in a two- story base, which is also used for exhibitions.

2011 earthquake

When Tōhoku earthquake in March 2011, the complex was damaged on the inside and closed for cleanup and safety checks by the end of June 2011. The first exhibition after the re- opening was CAFE in Mito 2011 - Relationships in Color.
