Region

Arta (Arabic أرتا, Artà DMG ) is a place in Djibouti with about 6,200 inhabitants and capital of the same region of Arta.

The place is located at about 750 meters altitude in Ougoul massif overlooking the Gulf of Tadjoura. Under French colonial rule a new housing estate was built in 1946. Because of the usually dry and relatively cool weather Arta served as a summer residence for French military personnel. Today, several members of the elite Djibouti have a second home in Arta.

Formulated in 1963 representatives of the two communities in Djibouti - the Afar and Issa - the "Declaration of Arta " in which they professed to hold together under the protection of France.
