Artenara, Las Palmas

Artenara is a community on the Canary island of Gran Canaria. It has 1198 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013) on an area of 66.7 km ².

The highest point is the Pico de las Nieves ( 1,949 m), the second highest point is the Roque Nublo ( 1,813 m).

Artenara is located southwest of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and north of Puerto Rico. The neighboring municipalities are Agaete in the north, Gáldar in the northeast, Tejeda in the east, southeast and south and San Nicolás de Tolentino in the West.

The town's landmark is the parish church of San Matias. In the older part of the town there are numerous inhabited cave dwellings. In the cave chapel of the Virgen de la Cuevita ( Virgin of the small cave ) is a statue, said to have been brought in the 14th century by missionaries from Mallorca here. The figure of Mary is also the patron saint of cyclists and veterans of the island. Your Fiesta is the end of August.
