Artenay

Artenay is a commune with 1842 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Loiret in the Centre region. Mayor since 2001 is Bernard Chevolot.

Geography

The city is located about 20 km north of Orleans and about 90 km south of Paris in a plane. Neighboring municipalities are Dambron, Bucy -le- Roi, Baigneaux, Trinay, Poupry, Lion en Beauce and Ruan.

History

The Battle of Artenay on October 10, 1870 was an episode of the German - Prussian War of 1870 /, 1871. The German painter Otto von Faber du Faur created a 71.5 × 150.5 cm high oil painting entitled Attack of the Dragoon Regiment No. 5 in Artenay October 10, 1870. The painting on canvas is now (2011) held by the Bavarian Army Museum in Ingolstadt. On 3 December 1870, came at Artenay again to a fight during the Battle of Orléans.

Louis Blériot succeeded in 1908, the first flight between two cities, namely between Toury and Artenay.

In Artenay there is a primary school, which is attended half of students from the surrounding communities.

Economy

The community is characterized mainly agricultural. The largest company is a sugar factory ( on the northern outskirts of the village between the N 20 and the railway line). The sugar factory is part of the Tereos Group, the world's second largest sugar producer. Here about 60,000 tons of sugar are produced annually. The number of employees is 275 persons (all figures from 2005).

Infrastructure

The transport connection is currently on the following major roads:

  • A 10 motorway Paris -Tours as well as
  • National road N 20 (Paris- Orléans )
  • National road N 154 ( Rouen Artenay )
  • The A - 19 Courtenay Artenay is planned and will be commissioned in 2009.

The railway line from Paris to Orléans performs Artenay.
