Arthur Foote

Arthur Foote ( born March 5, 1853 in Salem, Massachusetts, † April 8, 1937 in Boston, Massachusetts ) was an American composer.

Together with John Knowles Paine, Horatio Parker, George Chadwick, Edward MacDowell, and Amy Beach it is counted for Second New England School, which is considered the founder of the independent classical music in the United States.

Foote studied at the Conservatory in Boston with Stephen Albert Emery and Harvard University with John Knowles Paine. Then he took lessons with the organist Benjamin Johnson Lang and became a music teacher and organist in Boston.

He composed two orchestral suites, two overtures, four character pieces for orchestra (Four Character Pieces after the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam ), a Serenade for Strings, chamber music, choral ballads, piano pieces and songs.
